World Water Day

April 17, 2018

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 was ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

World Water Day celebrated its 25th birthday in 2018. On one hand, you could wonder why we have only been focusing on the importance of water for 25 years, while on the other, celebrate the additional focus this precious commodity has been given in these years.

Do you know that:

  • 1 billion people have no safely-managed drinking water services
  • We lose 40 billion tonnes of loose topsoil washed into water ways each year
  • 80% of all the world’s wastewater flows back into the rivers and oceans without being treated?
  • Around 1.9 billion people live in areas where water is already scarce
  • You can do something about this

At Out of the Box, we know that water is the source of life. As we work with communities in cities and rural communities alike, we see how essential access to clean and reliable sources of water is to individuals, families and communities alike.

This years theme reminded us that many solutions already exist in nature – we just need to change the way we think and act.
